「Watch The World Vlog #92 Oral history of HK watches & clocks | The art of naming – Chinese names of watch brands」
Brand names of Swiss watches are mostly composed of founders’ surnames, which, sometimes, is a mouthful for Chinese to pronounce. To cater to the Chinese, many times, brands will adopt a Chinese name which is not only easy to say but also easy to remember. There is an old saying, “not afraid of a bad life, but most afraid of a bad name”. Speaking of the art of naming, I absolutely have to salute Dr. Samson Sun. The Chinese names of Girard Perregaux, Rado and Citizen all came from him. What literary realm and insight does this senior gentleman possess on watches? What would an astounding and elegant Chinese name bring to the brand?
